Normally it takes 4 to 6 weeks before potatoes will start to sprout in the ground. 15 Years ago Steve and Paula changed this by implementing the green sprouting process. They now fill their greenhouses with potatoes, keep them warm and sprout them before planting them in the ground. When the potatoes are planted, the ground is covered in plastic or fibre cover to keep the potato sprouts warm. This strategy speeds the growth process.
The potatoes grow for various lengths of time depending on the size of potato required. Mini potatoes and creamers (early potatoes) demand a higher price.
Over 600 acres of potatoes are harvested throughout the Summer and Fall.
After harvesting, the potatoes are taken to the washing and sorting facility. The potatoes are washed in clean, non-recycled water and then dried and checked for quality before they are sorted by size.
The potatoes are sorted with an automated machine into jumbos, selects (A Grade), minis (B Grade), and creamers (C Grade).
After sorting, the potatoes are weighed by a state of the art computerized machine to precise pre-determined weights. The machine also packages the potatoes in boxes or bags.
Facility & Equipment
Since the Fetts started farming potatoes in 1972, they have developed
and implemented various standards, technologies, and programs which
have helped advance the company to its present operating status.
S.
Fett Farms has implemented automated washing and sorting equipment and
computerized weighing equipment to more efficiently process and package
their products.
The building, machinery, and storage bins are made of tin,
aluminum, stainless steel or plastic.
We have moved away from wood
because wood holds bacteria.
This way our farm has no rust, no bacteria, and everything is very easy to clean.
